Typhon is both a summon and a boss in the Final Fantasy franchise. He first appears in Final Fantasy VI as a boss and in Final Fantasy VII as a summon. In most of his appearances, Typhon is partnered with Ultros. Typhon is a large purplish-pink monster with a set of sharp yellow teeth, pointed ears, and a second face on his behind, which has sharp teeth on its lower jaw. Typhon's signature attack is Snort, which forcefully ejects a party member from battle. Typhon is generally weak to Ice-based attacks.

History

Final Fantasy VI

In Final Fantasy VI, after the party defeats some of the Imperial Air Force on the Blackjack, Ultros is brought onto the ship by Typhon, and a battle against Ultros starts. After a while, during the battle, Ultros calls for Typhon's help. Once Typhon has taken enough enough, he uses Snort to blast the party off the Blackjack, forcing them into battle against the Air Force.

Later, Typhon can be fought as an opponent in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum if the party bets a common item. Typhon always uses Snort on his first turn, meaning that a character with high Speed must attack Typhon before he can use the attack. An Elixir is always the reward for defeating Typhon.

In the original Super Nintendo and PlayStation versions, Typhon was named Chupon.

Final Fantasy remakes

In Final Fantasy remakes, starting with Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, Typhon is fought as a boss on floor B10 of Whisperwind Cove, where it is one of the four guardians. When the Warriors of Light defeat Typhon, they are rewarded with the Genji Helm.

Typhon's sprite is a brighter variation of his original Final Fantasy VI sprite. It would later be reused in Final Fantasy VI Advance, although with a less brighter palette but still more than in the original Final Fantasy VI.
