The PlayStation is a home console manufactured and created by Sony. It was first released in 1994, as Sony's first video game console. In 2000, the console received a successor, the PlayStation 2. All PlayStation games are backward compatible with the PlayStation 2. Square's first PlayStation game was Final Fantasy VII, which first released in January 1997. The game's overwhelming success ended Square's partnership with Nintendo for a several years, and all of Square's home console titles were exclusively released for the PlayStation.
The first few games of the Chocobo series and the first Final Fantasy Tactics installment are for the PlayStation. Remakes of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, and Final Fantasy VI were also released for the console. In North America, these were only included in compilation releases, although in Japan, all five games were released individually.
In September 2018, Sony released a dedicated version of the PlayStation, the PlayStation Classic, and Final Fantasy VII is the only Final Fantasy-related title included.
