Great Malboros are a stronger variant of Malboro. They are a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy franchise, and they first appear in Final Fantasy II. A Great Maloboro's body consists of numerous root-like feet and a head with many flailing vines.
History[edit]
Final Fantasy II[edit]
In Final Fantasy II, Great Malboros are encountered in the Mysidia area (after obtaining Ultima), Jade Passage (floors B1-B6), Pandaemonium (floors 1F-9F), and Arcane Labyrinth (Giants, Jade Passage). Whenever a Great Malboro attacks, there is a chance of its target being afflicted by a status effect, including Confusion, Mini, Paralysis, Silence, Sleep and Venom.
Great Malboros are a red palette swap of Malboros, although in the original Famicom release, their sprite depicts them as green and having sharp, red teeth.
Final Fantasy VI[edit]
In Final Fantasy VI, Great Malboros are only encountered in Kefka's Tower in the World of Ruin and, starting with Final Fantasy VI Advance, the Dragons' Den. Their ability is Bad Breath, and their special attack is Infernal Kiss, which they have a 33% chance of using. If Relm uses Sketch, she either uses Bad Breath (75% chance) or Poison (25% chance). A Great Malboro can be fought in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum if the party bets either a Flametongue, a Gold Hairpin, or a Hypno Crown, and the rewards are an Organyx, a Dragon Horn, and a Royal Crown respectively.
In the original Super Nintendo and PlayStation versions, they are named Evil Oscar.
