Basilisks are large horned lizards that appear as enemies in several Final Fantasy games, and their first appearance is in Final Fantasy. Basilisk are a stronger variant of Lizards, but usually have the Gaze ability, allowing them to petrify their target.
Basilisks share a name with a real-world reptile of the same name. Their ability to petrify others is derived from mythology, in which a person would be instantly petrified or killed if they glance at a basilisk.
In Final Fantasy, Basilisks are mainly encountered on the Cardian Islands and the Citadel of Trials's surrounding area. Basilisks are rarely encountered on floor B1 of Chaos Shrine in the past. In the Nintendo Entertainment System release, they are named SAURIA, a name attributed to a clade of reptiles such as crocodiles and lizards.
Basilisks look very similar to Lizards except their body is green.
In Final Fantasy II, Basilisks are encountered in Mysidian Tower (floors 2F-9F) and the Arcane Labyrinth's Wyverns area. Basilisks have higher stats than in Final Fantasy, and have the Gaze V ability (level 5).
Like their relatives, Basilisks were redesigned as horned lizards with bulging eyes, which is especially evident in their artwork. Basilisks still have a green body like in Final Fantasy.
In Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Basilisks are only encountered in the Bone Dungeon. Unlike their earlier appearances, Basilisks have a purple body instead of green (which is instead attributed to their relative, Salamand), and cannot petrify their target. During battle, Basilisks can use the Claw and Fang abilities.
Basilisks have 90 HP, and they each reward 81 EXP and 3 GP when defeated.
