The Freelancer has an even 24 in all four stats[1] and cannot gain Job levels with ability points, but has two empty ability slots instead of one. The Freelancer gains power by mastery of other classes, gaining stat boosts and innate abilities, which further boost stats or allow new options like dual wielding without having to select the specific ability. The abilities are Cover, Barehanded, Counter, Find Passages, Sprint, Vigilance, Learning, Magic Shell, First Strike, Dual-Wield, Light Step, Shiradori and Pharmacology[2], from the Knight, Monk, Thief, Blue Mage, Mystic Knight, Ninja, Geomancer, Samurai, and Chemist respectively.

Abilities that become innate to the Freelancer when their respective Job is mastered
Ability Job ABP Needed to Master Job Description
Cover Knight 690[3] Take single-target attacks meant for other characters that are crouching down (having 12.5% of their maximum HP or less). Won't activate if said character is affected by Petrify, Zombie, Dead, Sleep, Paralyze, Confuse, Berserk or Stop set, nor if the character is off-screen.
Barehanded Monk 700[4] gives the character base Freelancer Strength + 26 and greatly increases the potential of Bare Hands, which are used when no weapon is equipped.
Counter 50% chance of retaliating against successful physical attacks with a physical attack of the party member's own; counter-attacks cannot themselves be countered.
Find Passages Thief 635[5] Reveals (most) hidden passages in walls and invisible stepping tiles.
Sprint Allows you to run in dungeons, can be stacked with normal running to move four times as fast. Needed for a single chest in the game.
