This article is about the recurring species in the Final Fantasy games. For the object of the same name, see Bomb (object).

Bombs are recurring enemies and summons in the Final Fantasy franchise. They are red fireball-shaped creatures with yellow eyes and a pair of hands. Bombs first appear in Final Fantasy II. Bombs use fire-based attacks, although their signature ability is Self-Destruct, in which they explode, dealing damage to characters. They usually resort to using this move if they are low on HP. In several of their appearances, Bombs can also use fire-based abilities.

There are several variations of Bombs, such as Grenades, Balloons, and even an ice variant, Ice Bombs. Notable members include King Bombs and Mom Bombs.

History

Final Fantasy series

Final Fantasy IV

Bomb FF4 SNES sprite.png

In Final Fantasy IV, Bomb appear as both an enemy and summon. As enemies, Bombs are only encountered at Mt. Hobs. A Bomb Summon spell is one of the few summons that are dropped by enemies, specifically Balloons and Dark Grenades. It costs 10 MP for Rydia to summon a Bomb, which then uses Self-Destruct on an enemy. If a Mom Bomb self-destructs, it breaks into three regular Bombs.

Chocobo series

Chocobo Racing

In Chocobo Racing, Bombs are used as a countdown before each race. Once all three are activated, the race begins.

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales

In Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, Chocobo can collect six different pop-up cards of Bombs; each card shows three of them.

Bombs appear in a few microgames:

  • In Blazing Blocks, the objective is to tap rocks and line up three or more Bombs to blow up the crystals.
  • In Bomberwall, which is a Minesweeper-like microgame, the goal is to tap the blocks indicated by the arrows. Tapping an incorrect block reveals a Bomb, which then explodes. The game then reveals which blocks were empty and which had Bombs.
  • In Malboro Masher, one of the ways to lose is by tapping a Bomb.

Other appearances

Mario Hoops 3-on-3

In Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Bombs appear in the Bowser's Castle and Rainbow Road courts, where they jump out of the lava along with several Lava Bubbles. The Bomb then floats over the court, and the player can touch the Bomb with the Stylus to make it explode. All other characters affected by the explosion get burnt and start running around. If a character touches a Bomb, they get knocked back and lose the ball.
