Barnabas Tharmr is an antagonist of Final Fantasy XVI. He is the king of Waloed and the Dominant of Odin.
History[edit]
Background[edit]
Barnabas first arrives on the shores of Ash from parts unknown. Through his skills with his sword, he won himself the Kingdom of Waloed. Using Odin's power, he is able to quell the beastmen who rebelled against his rule, effectively bringing the entire continent of Ash under the Waloeder banner. At some point. he met Ultima, becoming his key player of ridding mankind of human consciousness. He also takes Cidolfus Telamon and Benedikta Harman under his wing as his lord commander and head of special operations, respectively. However, Cid had a falling out with him and defects, replacing him with Sleipnir Harbard as his new lord commander
Final Fantasy XVI[edit]
Barnabas is first seen alongside, Sleipnir and Benedikta, meeting with his allies from the Dhalmekian Republic on how to deal with the Iron Kingdom's new Dominant during the Battle of Nysa. Barnabas is disinterested and refused their aid much to the fury of Eugen Havel.
At Caer Norvent, an imperial outpost occupied by Waloed, Barnabas is seen with his lover Benedikta, worried that the Blight will consume all of Valisthea, before he plans to unite the Dominants to put end to the strife in the world. Eventually, Caer Norvent is destroyed, costing the royalists their only outpost on the continent of Storm.
Barnabas later primes Odin against the forces of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque at the Battle of Belenus Tor on his bid to encroach upon the continent of Storm. He was challenged by Sanbreque's Eikon, Bahamut, which ended in a stalemate. Regardless, the battle ended in Waloed's victory, allowing them to recapture Belenus Tor, and once again the royalists has an outpost on Storm.
Barnabas later recovered Benedikta's body and had her beheaded, delivering her head to Hugo Kupka, sending him into a rage to pit him against Ultima's Mythos, Clive Rosfield as part of a plot for him to absorb all the Dominant's power for Ultima.
