The Leather Shield is a weak shield made of hardened leather. It appears in some Final Fantasy games, and makes its first appearance in the first Final Fantasy game.

History[edit]

Final Fantasy[edit]

In Final Fantasy, a Leather Shield can be acquired by either purchasing it at Pravoka's Armor Shop or as a reward for defeating the Pirates. Leather Shields cost 12 gil and can be sold for 6 gil. In the original Nintendo Entertainment System version and the PlayStation version's Hard mode, Leather Shields cost 15 gil and can be sold for 7 gil. The Leather Shield increases its wielder's Defense by 2. It can be equipped by Warrior, his upgraded form Knight, or Ninja.

In the original Nintendo Entertainment System release, the Leather Shield is named Wooden Shield[1] (formatted in-game as WOODEN due to character space limitations).

Final Fantasy III[edit]

In Final Fantasy III, the Leather Shield is the earliest armor acquired. It can first be found in Altar Cave (floor B4). Later on, it can be bought at Ur's Armor Shop for 40 gil and also be found at Castle Sasune's main building, on the third floor.

In the Famicom version, Leather Shields provide 3 Defense, 2 Magic Defense, and 3% Evasion. In the 3D remake it was weakened to have a Defense of 2 (like in Final Fantasy), a Magic Defense of 1, and no Evasion bonus.

The Leather Shield can be equipped by ten classes: Freelancer, Onion Knight, Warrior, Red Mage, Knight, Thief, Dragoon, Viking, Dark Knight, and Ninja.
