Joshua Rosfield is a major supporting character in Final Fantasy XVI. He is the younger brother of Clive Rosfield, whose awakening as the Dominant of the Phoenix kicks off the events of the main story.

Background[edit]
Joshua is the second son of the Archduke of Rosaria, Elwin Rosfield. Though his older brother Clive was expected to inherit the Phoenix's power and become its Dominant, Joshua was chosen instead. Although Joshua is the Phoenix's Dominant, he spends most of his childhood frail and sickly. To help to bear Joshua's burden, Clive was appointed as the First Shield of Rosaria, his personal bodyguard.
Final Fantasy XVI[edit]
Joshua and Jill watched his brother, Clive spar with lord commander Rodney Murdoch. However trouble was brewing due to the Blight spreading to Rosarian territories and the aggressive Iron Kingdom moving against the duchy. His father Elwin decides to take action and needed Joshua to come along to Phoenix Gate. Clive too comes along, but not before Elwin sends him to quell a goblin infestation in the Stillwind marshes. However, the duchy was betrayed by the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. Clive sends Joshua and his father off while he and Rodney delay the imperials. However, his father was beheaded by imperials disguised as Rosarians, causing the child to prime Phoenix uncontrollably. Clive tries to get to him, but the appearance of a second Eikon of Fire, Ifrit attacked and supposedly kills the Phoenix and by extension, Joshua, causing Clive to swear revenge on Ifrit.
Unbeknownst to everyone, Joshua had been rescued by the Undying, a shadow organization which has protected the Rosfield family in secret for generations. They rescued Joshua's comatose body, but was unresponsive for five years until he regained consciousness in the year 865.
