Clive Rosfield is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy XVI. He is the First Shield of Rosaria, tasked with protecting his brother Joshua Rosfield, the Dominant of the Phoenix.
History
Background
Clive is the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, Elwin Rosfield. Though he was expected to inherit the Phoenix's power and become its Dominant, his younger brother Joshua was chosen instead. Clive decided to join the Rosaria army's ranks and become a Shield, not only to protect Joshua but also to gain a purpose in life, blessed by the Phoenix, allowing him to use its power. The army's ranks initially scorned Clive's joining, which they considered nepotism from Rosaria's ruling family, but he took his training seriously enough to gain their respect. He also gained the blessing of the Phoenix, allowing him to use some of its power.
Final Fantasy XVI
Clive is trained by Lord Commander Rodney Murdoch of the Shields of Rosaria, with Joshua, Jill, and Torgal watching him on. After completing his training, the youths learned that his father Elwin has returned and headed to greet him. His mother, Anabella then scolds Joshua for staying outdoors, and gave Clive a dirty look. After Anabella left, Clive, Joshua, Jill and Lord Murdoch went to greet Elwin together, joining the crowd as he and his company arrives on Chocobos.
Clive is later summoned by his father, learning that the Blight has finally spread into Rosarian territory, and the duchy is planning to reclaim Drake's Breath from the Iron Kingdom. Before going to war, Elwin and Joshua would perform the Ancestral Rite of Reunion. But Clive is sent to Stillwind to quell a goblin infestation first before joining up with them, taking Tyler and Wade alongside him to prove his strengh, and to quiet his scornful mother for good.
