The Final Fantasy Legend, known in Japan as Makai Toushi Sa·Ga, is a video game originally released for the Game Boy, and was both developed and published by Square. The game originally released in Japan in December 1989. It is the first game of the SaGa series and the first role-playing video game to release on the Game Boy. The North American release was linked to the Final Fantasy franchise to help with marketing as it was both the second RPG and Final Fantasy title that Square released in America. The game would later be re-released by Sunsoft for the same system in 1998. The Final Fantasy Legend would later receive two sequels — Final Fantasy Legend II and Final Fantasy Legend III — both of which similarly originated as the second and third titles of the SaGa series respectively.
Square followed with a remake for the WonderSwan Color and mobile phones in 2002 and 2007 respectively, both dropping the connection to the Final Fantasy franchise entirely.
In December 2020, The Final Fantasy Legend and its two sequels were re-released for the Nintendo Switch compilation title, Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend.
