The world of Valisthea was once governed by a high-tech civilization in the sky, which collapsed in a devastating war 1500 years before the game's events. This civilization's remnants were scattered all over Valisthea, and it is now treated as a legend. The current civilization of Valisthea is centered around six nations across two continents, Ash and Storm; the Mothercrystals controlled by said nations; and the Eikons, magical elemental beasts based on recurring ''Final Fantasy'' summons.
 
In the plot of ''Final Fantasy XVI'', Valisthea is going through the outbreak of the Blight, an aether-depleting phenomenon that eventually causes conflict among its nations. Important to the nations and the military are Dominants, humans who can use magic without the need for crystals and summon the Eikons, and are treated with varying degrees of respect depending on the nation.
