Poison Toads are toad enemies which appear in a few Final Fantasy games, and they first appear in Final Fantasy II. As their name would suggest, Poison Toads have the ability to inflict Poison on their target. They have a slightly stronger variant, Gigantoad.

Game appearances[edit]

Final Fantasy II[edit]

PlayStation Portable sprite

In Final Fantasy II, Poison Toads are encountered in the Palamecian Desert, Tropical Island (floors B1–B5), and Arcane Labyrinth (Desert). They are vulnerable to Ice-based attacks. There is concept artwork of a Poison Toad in which it has red spots, and it is looking at a small sword. This artwork has a recolor in which the Poison Toad's body is orange, its stripes are black, and its eyeballs are yellow. The recolored artwork appears to show the Poison Toad standing on a light blue puddle. The small sword was also removed from the artwork recolor.

In the original Famicom release, Poison Toads' sprite depict them as having the same pose as in their concept artwork, and they have an orange body, muddy brown stripes, and lavender eyes and hairs. Starting with the WonderSwan Color remake, Poison Toads were given a red body with a dark purple underbelly and eyes, and were given a different pose in which they stick out their blue tongue. Starting with the PlayStation Portable remake, Poison Toads had their original pose from the Famicom release reinstated but have a red body, black stripes, and yellow hairs, eyes, and toes.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest[edit]

In Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Poison Toads have an indigo body and a light green underbelly. They are encountered as enemies in the Bone Dungeon. During battle, Poison Toads can use the Poison Fluid attack to poison their target. A Poison Toad's damaged sprite shows it toppled over and having a large, white cross bandage on its stomach.
