Proficiency
Proficiency is a grade for weapons and armor in Bravely Default. It dictates how much of a multiplier a piece of equipment's stats will be applied to (does not affect any base stat modifiers the equipment). Jobs fixed abilities, and specific support abilities can increase proficiency of various equipment.
The scale is from E, D, C, B, A, and S, in ascending order of 20% multiples (i.e. E rank proficiency gives no unchange, and S rank equipment, and S rank proficiency gives a 100% increase, or double its bsse stats)[1][2][3] . This means that despite some equipment having better base stats than others, weaker equipment can become superior than its usually stronger competitor in the hands of particular Job/fixed ability/support ability combinations.
