The PlayStation 3 is the third home console in Sony's PlayStation line. It is the successor to the PlayStation 2, and it was first released in 2006. The PlayStation 3, despite eventually being a financial success, struggled to sell in its early years and lagged behind its predecessors considerably. This is mainly due to the high price tag and lack of compelling exclusives due to the proprietary hardware being difficult to develop for. This is also true for the Final Fantasy franchise, which started appearing as multi-platform titles for the first time during this generation.

Games[edit]

Final Fantasy XIII debuted on this system alongside an Xbox 360 version in 2009. The game's two sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 in 2011 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in 2013 also appeared on this system. Final Fantasy XIV appeared on the system in 2013, but the servers were shut down in 2015 after the release of the Heavensward expansion. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, a remastered collection of both games, also appeared on this system in 2013. Two collections of remastered Kingdom Hearts games, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix debuted on this system. Due to all PlayStation 3 models supporting PlayStation discs and some models supporting PlayStation 2 discs, all Final Fantasy games available for those systems are playable on their corresponding models.
