The Ultima Weapon is a powerful sword that appears in many games of the Final Fantasy franchise, and has debuted in Final Fantasy VI. Ultima Weapon shares a name with a powerful beast, who also debuted in the same game, and in some games, it drops an Ultima Weapon upon being defeated.
In many of its appearances, the Ultima Weapon's attack power is determined by how much HP its wielder has, so the more HP a character has, the more powerful the Ultima Weapon becomes.
History[edit]
Final Fantasy series[edit]
Final Fantasy VI[edit]
In Final Fantasy VI, the power of the Ultima Weapon (named Atma Weapon in the Super Nintendo and PlayStation releases) is based on how many HP the wielder has, so the more HP the character has, the stronger the Ultima Weapon becomes. Because of the graphical depiction of the Ultima Weapon, it is believed to be an immaterial, energy-based weapon, similar to a lightsaber from the Star Wars franchise.
Final Fantasy VII[edit]
In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud receives the Ultima Weapon after the party defeats Ultimate WEAPON entirely.
Final Fantasy VIII[edit]
In Final Fantasy VIII, the Ultima Weapon returns, and it has a similar appearance as in Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy IX[edit]
In Final Fantasy IX, Zidane's most powerful weapon is the Ultima Weapon. The blades and guards look similar to the Ultima Weapon from Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy X[edit]
In Final Fantasy X, Tidus's Celestial Weapon is named Ultima Weapon in Japanese, and was translated to Caladbolg in English localizations.
Final Fantasy (remakes)[edit]
In the remakes of Final Fantasy, starting with Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, the Ultima Weapon is a sword attainable after clearing the final Soul of Chaos dungeon.
Kingdom Hearts[edit]
The Ultima Weapon also makes an appearance in Kingdom Hearts. It is the most powerful upgrade of Sora's keyblade.
