Clive is the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, Elwin Rosfield. Though he was expected to inherit the Phoenix's power and become its Dominant, his younger brother Joshua was chosen instead. Clive decided to join the Rosaria army's ranks and become a Shield, not only to protect Joshua but also to gain a purpose in life. The army's ranks initially scorned Clive's joining, which they considered nepotism from Rosaria's ruling family, but he took his training seriously enough to gain their respect. He also gained the blessing of the Phoenix, allowing him to use some of its power.

After a training session with Lord Commander Rodney Murdoch of the Shields of Rosaria, Clive meets with his father Elwin, from whom he learns that the Blight has spread into Rosaria and the duchy is planning to reclaim the Mothercrystal Drake's Breath from the Iron Kingdom. While on the way to meet Elwin and Joshua at Phoenix Gate for the Ancestral Rite of Reunion, Clive quells a goblin infestation at Stillwind Marsh with the ducal guards Tyler and Wade; not only to prove his strength as a Shield of Rosaria, but also to prove his mother Anabella wrong about him.
Clive is trained by Lord Commander Rodney Murdoch of the Shields of Rosaria, with Joshua, Jill, and Torgal watching him on. After completing his training, the youths learned that his father Elwin has returned and headed to greet him. His mother, Anabella then scolds Joshua for staying outdoors, and gave Clive a dirty look. After Anabella left, Clive, Joshua, Jill and Lord Murdoch went to greet Elwin together, joining the crowd as he and his company arrives on Chocobos.

When Clive arrives at Phoenix Gate, the fort has been infiltrated by forces from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, who aim to capture Joshua and kill Elwin. Although Clive delays the imperial army's advance with help from Murdoch, Tyler, and Wade, Elwin is killed by disguised Sanbrequois soldiers. Helpless, Clive is forced to watch as a second Dominant of Fire, with the Eikon Ifrit, kills the awakened Phoenix. Clive swears revenge for Joshua's death, only to be captured by the Sanbrequois army and enslaved as a Bearer into their ranks.
Clive is later summoned by his father, learning that the Blight has finally spread into Rosarian territory, and the duchy is planning to reclaim Drake's Breath from the Iron Kingdom. Before going to war, Elwin and Joshua would perform the Ancestral Rite of Reunion at Phoenix's Gate. But Clive is sent to Stillwind to quell a goblin infestation first before joining up with them, taking Tyler and Wade alongside him to prove his strengh, and to quiet his scornful mother for good.

Still driven by revenge against the unknown Dominant, Clive spends the next thirteen years in the Sanbrequois army's Bastards, an all-Bearer unit, under the alias "Wyvern". Clive later takes part in the Battle of Nysa, where he and the Bastards have been sent to kill the Dominant of Shiva, but is temporarily incapacitated when Shiva fights Titan. After fighting a horde of Ironblood fanatics to get to his target, Clive discovers that Jill is Shiva's Dominant. Refusing to kill his childhood friend, he betrays and kills the Bastards' commander before being saved from an Ironblood ambush by Cidolfus Telamon, accompanied by an adult Torgal.
In Stillwind Marsh, the three manages to clear our most of the goblins, cornering its leader before being swallowed by a morbol in which they also dispatched. The appearance of the morbol this far from its natural habitat shocks the three, prompting Clive to send a petition for reinforcements in the area before heading to Phoenix Gate.

Clive is taken to safety in Cid's Hideaway, where he joins Cid's cause to free Bearers from slavery while still looking for the unknown Dominant. While Cid rescues a captive group of Bearers in Lostwing, Clive follows rumors that Benedikta Harman is holding the second Dominant of Fire captive in the fortress Caer Norvent. Clive defeats Benedikta in battle and inadvertently absorbs her Eikonic powers before escaping the fort. After chasing a vision of the Dominant of Fire through the Sanbrequois countryside, Clive is forced to fight Benedikta again, now fully transformed into Garuda. Clive then unexpectedly primes into Ifrit and kills Garuda, but despite this, he continues to rampage until Cid transforms into Ramuh to quell him.
Later that night, Phoenix Gate came under attack by Sanbrequois forces aiming to capture Joshua and slaughter its inhabitants. Clive urged his father and Joshua to escape while he delays the imperial forces alongside Rodney Murdoch. Together, they fought off the imperial forces including one of their dragoons, the Knight of the Blinding Dawn. After defeating him, he takes notice of a hooded man who seemingly addressing him before Rodney informed him that the imperial forces have infiltrated Rosalith a day earlier, realizing his father and brother are in danger.

Back in the Hideaway, Clive is stripped naked and chained in the dungeon, finally learning that it was he that transformed into Ifrit that night at Phoenix Gate and develops suicidal depression, even requesting Cid to kill him, claiming himself to be a monster that killed Joshua. Cid then frees him and told him to get dress and meet him outside.
However, Clive was too late, Elwin is murdered by imperial forces disguised as Rosarian soldiers, and the shock of his death causes Joshua to lose control of the Phoenix and transforms and begins destroying the castle. Clive begs him to stop before he too unknowingly transforms into the Eikon, Ifrit, unintentionally killing Rodney and unconsciously attacks his brother and seemingly kills him despite his pleas to stop. Not knowing that he transforms into Ifrit, Clive swears revenge on Ifrit before falling unconscious, believing that the hooded man from early was the one who killed Joshua.

The next morning, Clive was found among the rubble by the surviving imperial soldiers and Anabella, the mastermind behind the incident who initially orders his death, before deciding to forcibly enslave her son as an imperial soldier on the frontlines out of hatred of her late husband, branding him as a Bearer.

For the next thirteen years, Clive fought as part of the Bastards a small Sanbrequois unit made up of bearers under the alias "Wyvern". His only reason to fight is to survive until he finds the man who was allegedly responsible for the murder of his brother and kill him.

Clive and the Bastards later take part in an assassination mission to kill Shiva's Dominant in the Battle of Nysa between the Dhalmekian Republic and the Iron Kingdom. The Bastards uses the chaos to conceal themselves. However, things turn for the worse as their respective Eikons, Titan and Shiva clashed, and in the ensuing chaos, lost Biast, and Clive blacked out. After regaining consciousness, his commander Tiamat briefed him on the situation. They then attacked the remaining Ironbloods and Shiva's Dominant. When Clive found out that the Dominant was his childhood friend, Jill, Clive turns on Tiamat to protect Jill.

The remaining Ironbloods ambushed him, just as he was about to be killed, Cid saves him, joined by Goetz, an adult Torgal. While Clive happily greeted Torgal, he is wary of Cid who showed knowledge of who he was, referring to him by name and pointing out he possessed the Blessing of the Phoenix. He then leads Clive through the deadlands to his Hideaway.
