Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is a 2001 computer animated feature film affiliated with the Final Fantasy franchise. Produced by Columbia Pictures and Squaresoft under the subsidiary Square Pictures and distributed by Sony Pictures, the film was the first to use photo-realistic visuals and was the most expensive video game inspired film on release. Despite a mixed to positive reception, the film was a box office bomb that led to the demise of Square Pictures and nearly destroyed both Square and Enix.
