Dire Rats are basic brown rat enemies that first appear in Final Fantasy XII. They also have a stronger variant named Lab Rats.
In Final Fantasy XII, Dire Rats only appear in the Garamsythe Waterway. At the start of the game, Vaan is hunting some Dire Rats, but is interrupted by Kytes, who tells him to leave the area before someone discovers them. Vaan decides to kill three more Dire Rats (during which the player controls him in battle), and he then leaves Garamsythe Waterway with Kytes.
