The battle system is purely turn-based, like the Famicom installments. However, characters can build up Brave Points (BP) to use during battle by defending using the "Default" command. Stored BP can be used via the "Brave" command to perform multiple actions in one turn.
The game also makes use of the job system, which mostly works just as how it did in Final Fantasy V. New jobs are obtained by getting "Asterisks", which are obtained by defeating certain bosses who are of said job.

Brave and Default
The battle system is purely turn-based, like the Famicom installments. However, characters can build up Brave Points (BP) to use during battle by defending using the "Default" command. Stored BP can be used via the "Brave" command to perform up to four actions in one turn. If your BP goes into the negatives, that character cannot until their BP goes back to 0, with their BP naturally regenerating by 1 every turn.
Jobs
The game also makes use of the job system, most closely resembling the system in Final Fantasy V. The party is able to equip a second set of skills unique to a particular job and several passive abilities using a point system, where some abilities cost more points than others.
<br>
Every job can equip most weapons and armor, but some are better suited for certain jobs than others via a rank system; this multiplies the base stats of each piece of equipment when worn, up to 100% (double) their normal stats with an S rank. I.e. a sword with higher base stats than a rod could still have inferior damage output than said rod, if a Black Mage will be equipping it.
New jobs are obtained by getting "Asterisks", which are obtained by defeating certain bosses who are of said job.

Bravely Second
Bravely Second (mechanic)
Bravely Second is a special mechanic added to For The Sequel and retained in the localization release. The character who activates it will freeze time and can use Brave without consuming BP, and the damage limit (9999 per attack) will be removed. Bravely Second runs on SP (Sleep Points) and has to either be recharged via sleep mode, with eight hours giving you 1 SP, or buying an SP drink with real-life money.

The Bravo Bikini was edited in non-Japanese copies of the game to have no cleavage and for the panties to become shorts. The characters were also aged up in non-Japanese copies; i.e. Ringabel is 18 and not 21 in the original Japanese.
