Prior to the events of ''Final Fantasy'', Astos cursed the [[Elf Prince]] into an eternal slumber and stole all of the [[Elven Castle]]'s treasure. He also stole [[Matoya]]'s [[Crystal Eye]] to make her blind so that she could not make a potion to cure the Elf Prince.

Years later, the [[Warriors of Light]] go to the [[Western Keep]] and find the '''Lone King'''<ref>''Final Fantasy'' manual, page 54.</ref>, who is actually Astos in disguise. The king asks the warriors to find his [[Crown]] to restore the ruined castle. When the Warriors of Light return with the Crown, Astos reveals his true form, and they start to battle. The Warriors of Light manage to defeat Astos and obtain the Crystal Eye, which they can return to Matoya, who then makes the [[Jolt Tonic]] for the warriors to awaken the Elf Prince.

In remakes starting with ''[[Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls]]'', Astos's ghost is encountered and battled the [[Whisperwind Cove]].

Astos is the main antagonist of the ''[[Captain N: The Game Master]]'' episode "The Fractured Fantasy of Captain N". Astos's role in the episode is similar to the first ''Final Fantasy''; he stole the [[Crystal Eye|Light Crystal]] from a [[Matoya|witch]], so the heroes go on an adventure to retrieve it. Like the game, Astos is disguised at first before his true form is revealed, although he takes on the form of a green man rather than a king. Astos's main goal is conquering the prince's kingdom.

Astos is skinny, and he has messy hair and two horns on his head. He is a different color depending on the version. In the original Nintendo Entertainment System version, Astos has a light green body and red horns. In the [[MSX2]] version, his body was changed to dark blue. Astos's eyes are red in every version prior to ''Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls'', where he has white eyes. In the original Nintendo Entertainment System version, Astos has red claws, but in the MSX2 version, his horns and claws are dark purple. In ''Captain N: The Game Master'', Astos is purple, making it the only time where he is that color.

Starting with the [[WonderSwan Color]] version, Astos's body is light blue, his hair is white, he has two green horns and a pointed, red horn in between them, and he wears a golden bracelet on his right arm. His claws were also changed to silver. In the ''[[Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls]]'' remake, Astos's sprite was made even brighter.

Starting with the [[PlayStation Portable]] version, Astos's body is light green, his hair is light purple, and his eyes are yellow.

Astos's Lone King form started off in the Nintendo Entertainment System version as being depicted with wearing a purple robe with a green crown and hair. In the MSX2 version, his robe is red, and his crown and hair are orange. Starting with the WonderSwan Color version, Astos's Lone King form is depicted as wearing a green robe with a yellow royal crown with a green cap.
