The item first appeared in ''[[Final Fantasy III]]'' for the Famicom.

In Japanese, the "Echo Smokescreen" (やまびこえんまく) name is used only in ''Final Fantasy VI'' and ''VII'', while all other games use the "Echo Herbs" (やまびこ草) name. The English versions of the games do not follow the Japanese in this, however, and use "Echo Screen" in ''Final Fantasy VI'', ''VII'', ''VIII'', ''IX'', and ''X''; "Echo Herbs" in ''III'', ''IV'', and ''XII''; "Echo Grass" in ''I&II: Dawn of Souls''; and "Echo Drops" in ''XI'' and ''XIV''.
