First appearance Final Fantasy VIII (1999)
Species Bat

Redmaws are a type of bat enemy that appear in a few Final Fantasy games. They first appear in Final Fantasy VIII in which they are named Red Bats.

History[edit]

Final Fantasy VIII[edit]

"A type of bat with a huge mouth. Lurks in dark places. Dives quickly from the air to bite its target."
—Scan description

In Final Fantasy VIII, Red Bats are one of the first enemies encountered. They are one of the weakest enemies, and can usually be defeated from one hit. Red Bats are encountered in the Fire Cavern and the Deling City Sewer. Red Bats are weak to Wind-elemental attacks but are unaffected by Earth-elemental attacks because of their ability to fly. Red Bats are also unaffected by the Blind and Float statuses.

Final Fantasy XII[edit]

In Final Fantasy XII, Redmaws are encountered in both Henne Mines and Stilshrine of Miriam. The ones encountered in the latter area have slightly higher stats. Unlike in Final Fantasy VIII, Redmaws are affected by Earth-elemental attacks and are even vulnerable to it, despite their ability to fly.

There is a Sage Knowledge on Redmaws that can be unlocked in the Bestiary if the party has defeated 13 of them.

Bestiary entry[edit]

  • Classification: Avion
  • Genus: Steeling
Observations
"Being a variety of steeling whose body is covered in hard scales like to those of a dragon. It prefers to make its home in dry underground caverns. The name of "redmaw" comes from the fact that the creature's mouth is ever painted crimson with the drinking of its victims' blood. Its vampyric bite delivers a numbing venom sufficient to kill even the largest of fiends, should its fangs go deep enough."
Sage Knowledge (6 of 78)
"A name for the freefolk who ply the open skies in airships. Though they are collectively called "pirates," their actual occupations vary by individual. Some search for legendary treasures, some merely travel the world, while others are indeed ruthless villains who attack trade ships and plunder goods for profit. In recent years, the Archadian Empire has stepped up patrols, bringing in the worst of the lot, all but consigning the more flamboyant feats of piracy to history. Of late, many are pirates who have given up the thief's life for that of the headhunter, bringing their former comrades-in-arms to justice... for a bounty. Those few who remain pirates have struggled hard to retain the title, and are duly proud of it."
