Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical role-playing game for the PlayStation. It was released in Japan in 1997 and in North America in 1998. The game was developed by Square and also published by them in Japan but Sony Computer Entertainment published it in North America. Final Fantasy Tactics is the first and titular game of the Final Fantasy Tactics series. In 2003, a sequel was released for the Game Boy Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. In 2007, Final Fantasy Tactics received an enhanced port, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.

The game combines thematic elements of the Final Fantasy series with a game engine and battle system unlike those previously seen in the franchise. In contrast to other Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy Tactics uses a 3D, isometric, rotatable playing field, with bitmap sprite characters.

Final Fantasy Tactics is set in Ivalice, and its story follows Ramza Beoulve, a highborn cadet who finds himself thrust into the middle of an intricate military conflict known as The Lion War, where two opposing noble factions are coveting the throne of the kingdom. As the story progresses, Ramza and his allies discover a sinister plot behind the war.
